Dialog Semiconductor plc, a U.K.-based manufacturer of semiconductors, has reportedly announced its selection by AST & Science LLC, a designer and manufacturer of ultra-powerful LEO satellites, to develop 4 customized mixed-signal & RF Application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for their SpaceMobile network.

Sources with knowledge of the matter stated that the 4 tailored advanced RF chips will allow for a secured radio communication connection. In fact, this chipset will extend the network’s coverage capacity through Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity, further allowing for space-based network for smartphones.

Dermot Barry, Vice President ASIC Business Unit at Dialog Semiconductor mentioned in a comment that the company primarily focuses on helping its clients such as AST SpaceMobile gain a competitive edge by by offering an advanced RF ASIC chipset that meets the both commercial and technical requirements.

Barry added that custom ASICs play an integral part in Dialog Semiconductor, with clients benefiting from their top-class mixed-signal and advanced RF IP portfolio in a bid to develop the first space-based cellular broadband network for smartphones.

Tom Severson, CFO and COO at AST SpaceMobile reportedly said that the company’s decision to opt for Dialog was due to its positive track record in servicing the satellite communications market.

AST & Science looks forward in continuing their association with Dialog by developing, designing and supplying mission-critical chipsets in order to catering to the cellular coverage gaps for about 5 billion people as well as enabling AST SpaceMobile to offer smooth internet connectivity worldwide, Severson confirmed.

It is to be noted that AST SpaceMobile is the only cellular broadband space-based network to be accessible through a regular smartphone and will be able to provide connectivity from any metropolitan areas to the most remote locations.
